Cruise card. What it is?

Cruise card. What it is?

MSC Cruise Card

As we wrote earlier, during check-in for a cruise , you will be given a cruise card (Cruise ship ID card). Sometimes it is also called SeaPass (in different companies in different ways).
What is a cruise card and what is it for?

A cruise card looks just like a credit card. And it's the same size.

The cruise card shows the name of the liner, your first and last name, cruise dates, and a telephone number for contacting the liner's emergency service.
It is also mandatory to indicate the Assembly Station in case of emergency - Assembly Station. (All guests are required to undergo safety briefing, but more on that in the next topic).
Depending on the ship and the cruise company's policy, the restaurant where your dinner will be held, the table number and the shift number (1st or 2nd) may also be indicated. If the cruise is Freestyle, which is typical, for example, of the Norwegian Cruise Line, then information regarding meals is not indicated. Since it is understood that guests can come to dinner when and where it is convenient for them (if there is a free table, of course).

In addition to the information on the front of the card, on the back of the card there is a magnetic tape (like in credit cards), which also contains information about the passenger.

What is a cruise card for?

The cruise card has several purposes:
  • - this is a way to identify you as a passenger during boarding and disembarking to / from the liner. This is relevant both at the beginning / end of the cruise, and for boarding / disembarking while the liner is in ports of call. Although your photo is not provided on the Cruise card (there may be on the Cruise Card on the most modern liners), when you swipe the card, the ship's security officer sees your photo on his computer and only then lets you through.
  • - the cruise card is also the key to your cabin.
  • - a cruise card can also be an element of access to certain areas on the liner (for example, VIP areas, if the cruise you bought involves visiting such areas).
  • - Also, the cruise card is a payment method on the liner (alcoholic drinks, purchases in souvenir shops, in the Duty-free shop on board the liner). In order not to carry cash or a credit card with you everywhere, this method of payment was adopted. At the end of the cruise, the amount is deducted from the cruise card and you pay for it. If the amount exceeds the deposit, pay the difference. If it does not exceed the deposit, then the remaining amount is returned to you (in cash or on a credit card, depending on how you deposited money).
  • - if the meals on the liner are in shifts, the restaurant staff may ask for your card in order to make sure that you have come to “your” restaurant and on your shift. They will also indicate exactly where your table is located (indicated on the cruise map).
Sometimes, when boarding the liner, your passport may be taken away for the duration of the cruise. This is done for your convenience. So that in each port you do not have to mark yourself (since you go to neutral waters on the liner, and then enter the territory of another country), the liner employees do this for you. And you, instead of communicating with the border services, enjoy your vacation. When you go ashore while in port, the cruise card is your identification for the duration of the cruise.
